Day 1
It's 3:30. I'll leave for the airport in one hour.
I know that many people travel the world on a regular basis. So why do I feel this angst? Climbing the mountain? Visiting an AIDS infected area? For me, it really comes down to the summit of Kili.
A bit embarassing. The whole "I have to make it to the top" thing. Just being honest. Having exposed this trip to thousands of people it will be a bit embarassing if I have to say, "Hi . . . made it to 12k but couldn't go any farther."
Anyhow, we leave Akron/Canton at 6:50 PM and arrive in Amsterdam at 10 AM.
So this is day 1 . . .

you are leaving your "comfort zone" angst should be a natural feeling. What is that other corny phrase "because its there" You have choosen to do something and to your own self be true. You will be able to make this climb. CONFIDENCE DETERMINATION Have a safe trip.
Just look at it this way . . . if you make it to 12k, you will have done more than most of the thousands you have told about the trip will ever get to experience. You're going to have memories that will last a lifetime. Try not to be too nervous (easy for me to say, I know) and just trust that God will get you to the summit if He wants you there.

Your in the hands of the Trinity. Step by step you will follow as Rich Mullins says. I'm proud of you, press onward towards the goal, all of our efforts are compromised with self, but the Holy Spirit will prevail through you.
Greg, I always feel closer to God when I am hiking or climbing. Just being in His creation.
Go, enjoy your time with God. But remember Newman's quote, "I sought to hear the voice of God, and climbed the topmost steeple. But God declared, "Go down again, I dwell among the people."
Do come back to your people! You are in our prayers and in God's care.
I love reaching summits, but I love getting there just as much. Do what you are able to, be safe, and come back! :-)

Safety first pal. After Reading "Into Thin Air," hearing you announce your climb attempt (and especially your determination to summit) raised a little fear in me. Are you guys using oxygen bottles? Please don't be afraid to turn back if it becomes necessary - obey your guide. Stark County needs you to come back safely! I will pray first for your safety, and then that God will treat you to the summit experience!
