Junky Car Club
Today I joined the Junky Car Club. The Junky Car Club is "a group of people who have made a commitment to live with less so that we can give more."
Here are the requirements to join:
Basic Membership
1. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
2. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.
Chrome Membership
1. Your car is paid off and you have no car payments.
2. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
3. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.
Elite Lemon Membership
1. You are currently sponsoring and helping a child who is living in poverty. If you want to sponsor a child now, please click on the COMPASSION banner above.
2. Your vehicle is 10 years old or older and MAY have trouble starting on cold mornings, have a funky smell inside, and have an annoying hum coming from the radio.
3. You are wanting to live with less so you can give more and looking for ways to be more generous to those in need.
4. You care about the issues of poverty and social justice and want to bring awareness to these important issues.
At this point I belong at the Chrome Membership level. Though my Honda is paid for--it's not ten years old. Julie, Tabs and I sponsor three children through Compassion International: Inte (Who lives in Ecuador), Darwin (Who lives in Peru) and Bakari (Who lives in Tanzania).
I strongly encourage you to consider how you can live with less to give more. It's what Jesus- followers do.

I have a truck that is 10 years old (next year). It's paid for. It doesn't start all the time because I'm too lazy to buy a new coil wire. There's no annoying hum from the radio; however, there is a wicked squeal from the serpentine belt...does that count?
I sponsor a boy named Navan in India. I want to live with less so I can give more. I also care about issues or poverty around the world. However, I'm not sure what membership I could get as I gave up my car almost ten years ago and rely solely on public transportation that costs me a mere $72 per month. Where do I fit in?

We definitely need to join this club. We have a van that is ten years old, mostly starts, the locks don't open when you use the automatic "button", but they do go up and down when you hit a bump in the road, or go on long road trips (when we drove to MA this summer the locks went up and down for 12 hours on our retun trip!). Our other car has a muffler problem and you can hear my husband coming home from a mile away. I accidently hit it one morning after my husband said "make sure you don't hit my car,it's parked behind yours!". I joked and said, "I wished you hadn't told me that, cause I might have hit it accidently!" Then, in my morning rush, I really did forget! Crash! So, it's dented in the side and my husband loves telling the story and he doesn't plan on getting it fixed. Yes, these "cars" are paid for, but it's sooo tempting to get new! We both drive by every car lot with our tougues out and just dream about the day we might have cars that are "cute". Sometimes I cry and sometimes I laugh, but we are able to tithe and have sponsered a compassion child from Indonesia. I know most or our friends think we are absolutely nuts! But we stick by this crazy idea that we can live on less and do more with our resources......not for us, but for those who need more than we do. We still have soooo much and we live sooo comfortably.......it's fun to see how far you can go with this and realize how little you really need.
I really like the Junky Car Club idea because it's something most of us can relate to. Something that covers our basic needs, without desiring the latest and greatest all the time. Same could apply for our needing to upgrade our computers, cell phones, clothes, household appliciances etc etc etc.
But as a Jesus follower the most important facet of this whole idea is to redirect our resorces (extra margin) to be able to make a difference in someone's life who is less fortunate.

I am going to buy the materials, help build, and then sponsor an orphanage. That is my goal anyway. So..., lord willing my car will hold up long enough for me to do that.

Hey Greg look, have you ever walked through the parking lot at rivertree on any given Sunday and got in behind the wheel of a junkmobile parked beside a pretty little 07 Lexus and watched the looks you get while they stare like "awwh crap watch the doors?" I am fairly certain that we drive the JUNKIEST vehicle on the lot.
This weekend as usual we parked as far away from the building as possible and dashed for the door in the rain. We fear trunk monkeys will begin popping out of the real people cars on the outer loops soon asking us to park somewhere else. We have agreed to no car payment and yes it is 10 years old. We sponsor a compassion child. But it sure would be a lot more fun to fit in with the glamourous people whose engines don't sound like frieght trains once in a while.
